Hand Reflexology – Stress and Tension

Hi, welcome to my first instalment of Hand Reflexology techniques that you can do yourself.

Reflexology can be carried out on the feet, hands, face and ears. It is a technique that uses massage and stimulation of reflex points. These reflex points correspond to different areas of the body and by stimulating the reflex points it is believed that healing can occur. Reflexology is immensely relaxing and can help with the stresses of modern lifestyles and improve well being.

As a reflexologist I often give my clients advice on how they can carry on with their journey of self-care. Much of this advice includes hand reflexology that can easily be done whilst sitting watching television or relaxing in bed.

Stress and tension affects almost everyone. It is important to manage your stress and tension as it can lead to other illnesses. Below are some simple techniques that can help:

The dot indicates the solar plexus reflex. This reflex is good for calming especially whilst experiencing emotional issues. It can also be good for digestion which can be affected during times of stress.

To stimulate the reflex press on it with your opposite thumb for 4 counts (breathing in) and release for 4 counts (breathing out).

The dot indicates the brain reflex, located at the top of each thumb. Use your other thumb to slowly massage the tip of the thumb. This will encourage slower thoughts and a clearer mind.

The dot indicates the neck reflex, it is located at the base of your thumb. This is an area that can hold a lot of tension. Use you other thumb to slowly massage the area.

The adrenal gland reflex is particularly effective for stress and anxiety. It can be located within the fleshy part between the thumb and the first finger. Use your other thumb and first finger to gently squeeze for a few seconds and release. This can be repeated a few times.

Hand reflexology should be carried out for 5 minutes every day. Cream can also be applied which may help with ease of movements.
